KUKA KR Series Guide: KR6, KR16, KR30, KR60 and KR100

KUKA names its robots KR plus a number, and on a standard arm that number is the payload class in kilograms. A KR6 is a 6 kg class arm, a KR16 a 16 kg class arm, and the KR30, KR60 and KR100 step up from there. Letters mark the version. We stock all five sizes in Imlay City, Michigan.

Reading a KUKA Model Name

Start with the number right after KR. That is the size class. What follows it is the version:

  • Arc marks a version set up for arc welding, like the KR6 Arc.
  • L marks a long arm, like the KR16 L6-2 or the KR30 L15/2. Long arms trade payload for reach, so check the rated payload on the listing rather than going by the number after KR.
  • HA marks KUKA's high accuracy version, like the KR100-2 HA.
  • R plus a number on the newer small arms, like the KR6 R900, marks the reach class.
  • Jet is KUKA's overhead linear gantry robot, like the KR60 Jet.

The controller is listed separately. Our KUKA stock runs on either the older KRC2 or the newer KRC4, and each listing title says which. You can see the full lineup on our used KUKA robots page.

KR6

The small arm of the group. A 6 kg class robot handles torches, small grippers and light parts. The KR6 Arc is built for arc welding robots work, while the standard KR6 and the KR6 R900 fit robotic assembly, pick and place and light machine tending robots jobs. If your plant runs FANUC, the closest size is something like the FANUC LR Mate 200iD, a 7 kg robot with 717 mm of reach.

KR16

The KR16 is a common size for robotic MIG welding and general handling. It has enough capacity for a heavier torch package or a two part gripper. Our KR16-2 is listed as a robot cell, and the KR16 L6-2 is the long arm version for jobs that need reach more than capacity. On the FANUC side, compare the FANUC M-16iB/20 at 20 kg and 1,667 mm, or the FANUC M-10iA/12 at 12 kg and 1,420 mm.

KR30

The KR30 is a mid size arm. Ours is a KR30 L15/2 set up in a weld cell, an older 1998 unit. The long arm gives it extra reach around a fixture. Arms in this class also do parts transfer robots work between machines. A FANUC alternative a step above it is the FANUC M-20iA/35M, a 35 kg robot with 1,813 mm of reach.

KR60

Our KR60 robots are KR60 Jet gantry units on KRC4. The robot rides on an overhead linear axis, which lets it cover a long work zone and keeps the floor clear. That suits press tending and loading several machines in a row. For a floor mounted robot in a similar class, the FANUC M-710iC/50 carries 50 kg with 2,050 mm of reach.

KR100

The KR100 is the heavy arm in this group. A 100 kg class robot moves castings, stampings and fixtures, and it is a solid fit for material handling robots and palletizing robots work. Ours is the HA version on a KRC2. High accuracy arms are meant for jobs where path accuracy matters, such as laser welding robots or robotic material removal. A FANUC arm in the same class is the FANUC R-1000iA/100F, at 100 kg and 2,230 mm.

Before You Buy Any KR Robot

  • Match the controller generation, KRC2 or KRC4, to what your plant already runs.
  • Confirm the pendant and the robot connection cables come with the arm.
  • Check what tooling and dress pack are on it. For KUKA spares, look at our KUKA servo drives.
  • Plan freight. Everything ships FOB Imlay City, Michigan, and the buyer arranges freight.
