The Universal Robots UR10 is a six axis collaborative robot in the 10 kg payload class, the largest of UR's UR3, UR5 and UR10 models. It can work near people when a risk assessment of the full application supports it. We have UR10 units from 2017 and 2018 on our floor in Imlay City, Michigan.
What Collaborative Means on a UR10
A collaborative robot is built to limit the force it can put into a person and to stop when it hits something. That is what lets a UR10 run in some cells without a full fence. It does not mean no guarding, ever. The risk assessment has to cover the robot, the gripper, the part, the speed and where people stand. A UR10 swinging a sharp part may still need guarding, or a safety light curtain that slows or stops it when someone walks in.
FANUC takes the same approach with its CR line. Our data sheets for the FANUC CR-4iA collaborative robot, the FANUC CR-7iA, the CR-7iA/L and the FANUC CR-35iA are worth a look if you are comparing brands.
Where a UR10 Fits
The UR10 does well on jobs where a person used to stand at a machine all shift. Machine tending robots are the classic use: load a blank, close the door, unload the part. It also handles parts transfer between stations and light robotic palletizing at the end of a packing line.
Other common jobs are robot assembly, screwdriving and robotic dispensing. Add a camera and it can pick parts that are not in fixed spots. Our post on robot vision applications covers how that works.
Where a Traditional Arm Is the Better Choice
A collaborative arm gives up speed and payload to work near people. If the cell will be fenced anyway, a standard industrial arm will usually run faster and carry more. Heavy parts, long reach, high cycle rates and harsh environments all point toward a traditional robot. For small fast jobs, look at a FANUC LR Mate 200iD/7L. For heavier work, our used FANUC robots run up through the heavy payload lines.
Programming and Setup
A UR10 is taught on its pendant using UR's PolyScope software, or by moving the arm by hand to each point and saving it. That makes it approachable for plants without a robot programmer on staff. It can mount on the floor, a wall or the ceiling. It talks to your PLC and other equipment through I/O, which our post on industrial robot I/O explains.
The arm itself does not take much floor space, so a lot of UR10 cells are just the robot on a stand next to the machine it serves. Whatever you bolt it to has to be stiff and anchored, because a stand that flexes will show up in where the robot puts the part. A heavy steel stand or a bolted down plate keeps it steady. If you look at the robot floor plate we have listed, check the bolt pattern against the UR10 base first.
What to Check on a Used UR10
- Generation. Our listings show UR10, not UR10e. The e-Series is a newer generation, so if you are matching existing UR robots, check which one you run.
- Control box and pendant. Make sure both are included and belong with that arm.
- Software. Check the software version if you plan to run add ons from other suppliers.
- Tooling. Find out if a gripper comes with it. If not, plan the end of arm tooling early. If you swap tools often, look at quick change tooling.
- Safety settings. The force and speed limits get set for your application and checked as part of your risk assessment. Do not assume the last owner's settings fit your cell.
- Freight. Everything ships FOB Imlay City, Michigan, and the buyer arranges freight.
