FANUC M-900 Series Guide: M-900iA/260L, 350, 400L and the M-900iB

The FANUC M-900 is FANUC's heavy payload robot series, sized for loads past most of the R-2000 range and short of the M-2000. Our FANUC data sheets cover M-900 models rated from 150 kg to 700 kg. We carry a deep stock of the M-900iA/260L, M-900iA/350 and M-900iA/400L, plus M-900iB robots, in Imlay City, Michigan.

Where the M-900 Fits

Most heavy handling jobs start with an R-2000. Our FANUC R-2000 series guide covers that line. When the part plus the gripper gets past what an R-2000 is rated for, or you need more reach with a heavy load, the M-900 is the next step. Past that you are into the FANUC M-2000iA/900L and the rest of the M-2000 line.

M-900 robots show up on heavy material handling jobs: castings, engine and transmission parts, large weldments and full body assemblies in auto plants. They also do press tending on big presses and parts transfer between lines, where a long reach lets one robot cover two stations. For straight palletizing, also look at the M-410iB/700 palletizing robot, which is built for that job.

The M-900iA Models

Most of the M-900iA robots we carry run on the R-30iA controller. Some later units ship on the R-30iB.

M-900iA/260L. The long arm. The M-900iA/260L data sheet lists 260 kg of payload, 3,100 mm of reach, 0.3 mm repeatability and a mechanical weight of about 1,800 kg. This is one of the deepest stocks on our floor, mostly R-30iA units from 2011 through 2013, plus an R-30iB unit from 2018.

M-900iA/350. More payload on a shorter arm. The M-900iA/350 data sheet lists 350 kg, 2,650 mm of reach and about 1,720 kg of arm weight. We stock this one deep as well, on both the R-30iA and the R-30iB controller.

M-900iA/400L. A 400 kg long arm for heavy parts that sit far from the base. Specs are on the M-900iA/400L data sheet. Ours run on the R-30iA and date from 2013 and 2014.

M-900iA/600. The biggest M-900iA we carry, with 600 kg of payload and 2,832 mm of reach per the M-900iA/600 data sheet. The arm alone is about 2,800 kg.

The M-900iB Models

The M-900iB is the newer generation. The units we carry run on the R-30iB controller or the R-30iB Plus controller, so they are the ones to look at if you want a newer controller.

  • M-900iB/280. 280 kg with 2,655 mm of reach. The standard arm, without the extra reach of the 280L.
  • M-900iB/280L. Same 280 kg on a longer 3,103 mm arm, per the M-900iB/280L data sheet.
  • M-900iB/360. 360 kg with 2,655 mm of reach. Details are on the M-900iB/360 data sheet. We have R-30iB Plus units from 2020 and 2021, one of them never used.
  • Larger iB models. FANUC also built the M-900iB/330L, 400L and 700. We keep their data sheets on the blog for reference.

What to Check on a Used M-900

  • Payload with tooling. The rating has to cover the part, the gripper and any tool changer. A heavy gripper eats into payload fast on these jobs, and the load also has to sit within the wrist limits on the data sheet, not just the payload number.
  • Dress pack. Ask whether the dress pack and cables are with the arm. We have Becker dress packs that came off an M-900iB/360 in our robot dress packs and accessories listings.
  • Mounting height. Our M-900 robot risers from Utica Body and Assembly fit both the M-900 and R-2000 series. A riser lifts the base so the arm can reach down into a fixture or over a conveyor.
  • Foundation. An arm that weighs well over a metric ton, swinging a few hundred kilograms, needs a floor that can take it. Have that conversation with your plant engineer early.
  • Freight. Between the arm and the controller, plan for a heavy load. Everything ships FOB Imlay City, Michigan, and the buyer arranges freight.

Retiring a Line of M-900s?

We buy heavy robots, one at a time or a whole line coming out of a plant. Send the details through our sell your heavy robots page, or ask about industrial robot appraisals.
