FANUC R-2000 Series Robots: Models, Specs, and What to Check Before You Buy

The FANUC R-2000 is FANUC's heavy payload six axis robot, built to handle loads from about 100 kg up to 270 kg. It is the workhorse of automotive spot welding and heavy material handling. The generations you will run into are the R-2000iA, R-2000iB, R-2000iC and the newer R-2000iD. We keep R-2000iA, iB and iC robots on the floor in Imlay City, Michigan.

What the R-2000 Is Built For

Most R-2000 robots spent their first life in auto plants carrying a spot gun down a body line. That is still the job they do best. If you are looking at robotic spot welding, the R-2000 is usually the first arm on the list, and many of the units we have come set up for spot welding.

They are just as common on heavy material handling robots jobs: moving castings, engine blocks, stamped panels and anything else that is too heavy for a person to lift all day. The same reach and payload make them a good fit for palletizing robots at the end of a line and for press tending, where the rack mount versions sit up on a stand and reach down into the press.

Because so many plants standardized on them, parts and people who know them are easy to find. That is a big part of why used R-2000s stay in demand. You can see everything we have across the line on our used FANUC robots page.

The Generations

R-2000iA. The older arm. The ones we see are mostly early 2000s units running on the R-J3iB controller. An R-2000iA/165F carries 165 kg with 2,650 mm of reach and weighs about 1,210 kg. It is the cheapest way into an R-2000, and it is a good choice when the cell you are building does not need the newest software.

R-2000iB. The most common R-2000 out there and the one we stock the most of. Early iB robots ran on the R-J3iC and R-30iA controllers, and later ones shipped on the R-30iB. The R-2000iB/165F carries 165 kg with 2,655 mm of reach, and the R-2000iB/210F bumps that to 210 kg at the same reach.

R-2000iC. The newer arm, slimmer and lighter than the iB. An R-2000iC/165F weighs about 1,090 kg against roughly 1,170 kg for the iB version. The iC runs on the R-30iB controller or the R-30iB Plus controller, so it is the one to look at if you want current software and an easy tie in to newer equipment on your floor.

R-2000iD. FANUC's current version. We have the data sheets for the R-2000iD/165FH and the rest of the iD line on our blog. They are not common on the used market yet.

What the Letters and Numbers Mean

The number after the slash is the rated payload in kilograms. A 165F carries 165 kg, a 210F carries 210 kg. The letter tells you how the arm is built and mounted:

  • F is the standard floor mount arm.
  • L is the long arm. You give up some payload for more reach. The R-2000iB/125L reaches 3,005 mm, and the R-2000iC/210L reaches 3,100 mm.
  • R is the rack mount version, built to sit on a stand or shelf and work below itself. The R-2000iB/200R carries 200 kg with 3,095 mm of reach.
  • CF is the compact arm, a shorter version for tighter cells.

What to Check Before You Buy a Used R-2000

  • The controller. Make sure the controller matches the arm and the software you need. If you are tying it into an existing line, check how it will talk to your PLC. Our write up on industrial robot I/O covers the basics.
  • What comes with it. Ask whether the teach pendant, cables and dress pack are included. For welding cells, look at our R-2000iB/165F spot welding robots, which come set up for a spot gun.
  • Mounting. If you need the robot up higher, we carry R-2000 robot risers that fit both the R-2000 and M-900 series.
  • Spare parts. Servo motors, amplifiers, cables and reducers for the R-2000 are all in our FANUC robot parts inventory.
  • Freight. The arm alone runs about 1,100 to 1,550 kg depending on the model, plus the controller. Everything ships FOB Imlay City, Michigan, and the buyer arranges freight.
