FANUC Payload and Reach Quick Reference

FANUC Payload and Reach Quick Reference

This is a quick reference for FANUC robot payload and reach, organized by family, from the FANUC data sheets on our blog. Each model links to its data sheet, and to our stock where we have it. Payload is the rated load at the wrist in kilograms. Reach is the maximum reach in millimeters listed on the data sheet.

How to Read a FANUC Model Number

Take the M-710iC/20L as an example. M-710 is the family. iC is the generation, and a later letter means a newer generation, so an iC is newer than an iB. The number after the slash, 20, is the rated payload in kilograms.

The letters at the end tell you about the arm. Here is how they play out in the data sheets:

  • L is a long arm. The M-710iC/20L reaches 3,110 mm, against 2,050 mm for the standard M-710iC/50. You give up payload to get the reach.
  • S is a short arm. The M-10iA/12S reaches 1,098 mm, against 1,420 mm for the M-10iA/12.
  • F is the standard floor mount arm on the R series, and R is the rack mount version built to sit up on a stand.

Using These Numbers

Start with the heaviest part plus the gripper, then add margin. Next, measure the farthest point the robot has to reach from where the base will sit. Pick the smallest arm that covers both with room to spare. A bigger arm costs more to ship, takes more floor and needs more foundation than the job may call for.

Two cautions. A payload rating is the most the wrist can carry, and that includes your gripper. And payload alone is not the whole story, since the data sheet also limits how far the load can sit from the wrist. Check the full data sheet before you commit.

LR Mate

FANUC's small robots, used for machine tending, assembly and light pick and place. The older LR Mate 200iC is rated 5 kg with 704 mm of reach, so the 200iD gives you more payload with about the same reach.

M-10 and M-20

Medium payload arms for handling, tending and packaging. The M-10iA/12S listed above as the short arm example carries 12 kg, and most of the M-20 models we carry fall between 20 and 35 kg.

M-710

The step between the M-20 and the R-2000, for heavier handling and long reach jobs. The 20L is the one to look at when the part is light but the robot has to cover a lot of ground.

R-1000 and R-2000

The R-1000 is a compact arm in the 80 to 130 kg range per the data sheets. The R-2000 is the heavy workhorse for spot welding and material handling, and our FANUC R-2000 series guide covers the models we carry.

M-900

Heavy payload arms, past the top of most of the R-2000 range. The long arm trade off shows up clearly here: the M-900iA/260L carries less than the M-900iA/350 but reaches 450 mm farther.

M-410 Palletizers

Built for stacking at the end of the line, with fewer axes than a standard six axis arm.

M-2000

FANUC's largest arms, for very heavy parts.

Every number in the model lists comes from the data sheet linked next to the model. If a model you run is not listed here, there is a good chance we have its data sheet on our blog. We also stock Arc Mate welding robots, delta robots and SCARA robots. You can see all of them in our used FANUC robots category.
