We stock used ABB robots from the small IRB 120 up to the IRB 7600 heavy payload arm, and most of them run on the IRC5 controller. The IRB 4600-40/2.55 is our deepest ABB stock. This guide covers each model on our floor in Imlay City, Michigan, what it suits, and what to check before you buy.
Why Plants Buy Used ABB
ABB is one of the big robot builders, and plenty of plants built whole lines around it. If your floor already runs ABB, adding another ABB arm keeps your programs, spare parts and training the same. That usually decides it more than any one spec on a data sheet.
ABB arms like the ones on our floor show up in welding cells, machine loading and general handling. Our write ups on MIG welding robots, machine tending robots and material handling robots cover how those cells are usually set up.
The ABB Models on Our Floor
IRB 120. A small six axis arm for light assembly and small part handling on a bench or in a compact cell. It fits robotic assembly jobs where a bigger arm would just take up floor space. Ours are 2017 units on IRC5.
IRB 1200. Another compact arm with a bit more reach. Our ABB IRB 1200 data sheet lists the 5/0.9 version at 5 kg payload and 901 mm of reach. It is a good size for loading small machines and for robotic dispensing on small parts.
IRB 1600ID. The ID stands for integrated dress. The welding hoses and cables run through the upper arm instead of hanging off the outside, so the dress pack does not snag on fixtures. The IRB 1600ID 4/1.5 data sheet shows 4 kg payload and 1,500 mm of reach. Ours is a dual arm MIG setup built for arc welding robots work.
IRB 2400/16. An older arm rated for 16 kg. The one we have is set up as a MIG cell on an IRC5 controller. Our post on robotic MIG welding walks through what goes into a cell like that.
IRB 4400L/10. The long arm version of the IRB 4400, rated for 10 kg. Ours are 2002 units on the older S4C controller, set up for MIG welding. They make sense for a shop that already runs S4C equipment or needs a long reach welding arm and does not need current software. We also carry the used welding equipment that goes around a cell like this.
IRB 4600-40/2.55. Our deepest ABB stock, with units from 2022 and 2023 on IRC5. The IRB 4600-40/2.55 data sheet shows 40 kg payload and 2,550 mm of reach. That is enough reach to load larger machines and enough payload for a heavier gripper. Put the right end of arm tooling on it and it covers a lot of jobs.
IRB 7600 500/2.55. The heavy one. The name gives you the rating: 500 kg payload and 2.55 m of reach. Ours is a 2016 unit on IRC5. It is built for heavy handling, like palletizing robots at the end of a line or press tending with large parts.
What to Check Before You Buy
- The controller. Most of our ABB stock runs on IRC5. The IRB 4400 units run on S4C, which uses a different pendant and different hardware. Pick the one your people can support. For how the robot will talk to your PLC, see our write up on industrial robot I/O.
- Cables. Ask how long the arm to controller cables are and whether they come with the robot. We have an ABB 3HAC2566-1 cable on hand, plus an ABB cable set in our robot parts and accessories. Our post on robot connection cables explains what each one does.
- Welding gear. On a welding unit, check what is part of the cell: torch, wire feeder, power source. We stock Lincoln 455M power supplies if your cell needs one.
- Paint. For plants running ABB paint robots, we have an ABB IRC5P paint controller in parts.
- Freight and payment. Everything ships FOB Imlay City, Michigan, and the buyer arranges freight. An IRB 7600 needs a lot more truck than an IRB 120. If you want to spread the cost, look at our equipment financing page.
