FANUC ROBOTS

FANUC M-20 Series: M-20iA, M-20iA/35M, M-20iB/25 and M-20iD

FANUC M-20 Series: M-20iA, M-20iA/35M, M-20iB/25 and M-20iD

The FANUC M-20 is FANUC's mid payload six axis robot, built for parts and tooling from about 10 kg up to 35 kg. The versions you will run into are the M-20iA, the M-20iA/35M, the M-20iB/25 and the current M-20iD. We carry all of them in Imlay City, Michigan, including never used M-20iD robots.

Where the M-20 Earns Its Keep

The M-20 is the size most plants pick when an LR Mate is too small and an R-2000 is more arm than the job needs. You see it all over machine tending cells, loading lathes and mills where the part plus the gripper lands in that 10 to 35 kg window. Our M-20iA, M-20iA/35M and M-20iB/25 listings all name machine loading in their application lists.

It is just as common on parts transfer jobs between stations, general material handling work, and robotic material removal where the arm carries a deburring tool. If you are still deciding on size, our FANUC payload and reach chart puts the whole line side by side. Used units across the FANUC line are on our used FANUC robots page, and never used stock is on our never used FANUC robots page.

The Generations

M-20iA. The older of the generations, and still a common arm on the used market. The base M-20iA carries 20 kg with 1,811 mm of reach. FANUC also built long arm versions. The M-20iA/10L carries 10 kg with 2,009 mm of reach, and the M-20iA/12L carries 12 kg at the same 2,009 mm. The M-20iA/20M carries 20 kg at 1,813 mm. The M-20iA units on our floor run on the R-30iB Plus controller.

M-20iA/35M. The heavy wrist version of the iA. The M-20iA/35M data sheet shows 35 kg of payload with 1,813 mm of reach, so you get about the same reach as the 20M with 15 kg more capacity. Our listings call out a high inertia wrist, which matters when the gripper is wide or the part hangs off center. This is one of the deepest groups of stock we have, with 2016 to 2019 robots on both the R-30iB and the R-30iB Plus.

M-20iB/25. The M-20iB/25 carries 25 kg with 1,853 mm of reach and 0.05 mm repeatability. There is also an M-20iB/25C with its own data sheet, at the same 25 kg and 1,853 mm. The iB robots we carry are 2016 units on the R-30iB controller.

M-20iD. FANUC's current M-20. For exact payload and reach on an iD, check the individual listing. Here is what is on the floor: used M-20iD/25 and M-20iD/35 robots from 2020 and 2021 on the R-30iB Plus, plus never used M-20iD/25, M-20iD/35 and M-20iD/12L robots. The 12L units are 2025 robots on the R-30iB Mate Plus controller. The never used units are listed separately from the used ones.

Reading the Model Name

The number after the slash is the rated payload in kilograms. An M-20iA/35M carries 35 kg, an M-20iB/25 carries 25 kg. An L means a long arm, where you trade payload for reach, as the 10L and 12L show. The base M-20iA has no number after it, and its data sheet lists 20 kg. The letter after the "i" is the generation: iA, iB, iD.

What to Check Before You Buy a Used M-20

  • The controller. The R-30iB Plus is the newer controller of the two you will see on M-20iA and M-20iB robots. If the robot has to tie into a line you already run, read our FANUC robot controllers guide.
  • Tooling weight. Add the gripper to the part before you pick a model. A 22 kg part on a 5 kg gripper rules out a 25 kg arm. Our post on end of arm tooling covers what goes on the wrist, and remember that a tool changer adds weight of its own.
  • Cables and pendant. Ask whether the teach pendant and cables come with the robot, and how long the cables are. Our guide to robot cable sets explains how to match them.
  • Height and travel. If the arm has to work higher or cover more floor, look at robot risers and seventh axis tracks.
  • Spares. Servo motors, amplifiers and cables are in our FANUC robot parts inventory. Match part numbers before you order.
