Kawasaki's large robots cover the heavy end of its lineup: the BX and ZX series of large general purpose arms, the MX series for high payloads, and the CP series built for palletizing. We have never used BX200X, ZX130L, MX700N, CP180L, CP500L and CP700L robots on our floor in Imlay City, Michigan.
Where Large Kawasaki Robots Work
These are the arms you put on jobs that are too heavy for a person and too heavy for a mid size robot. Heavy material handling is the main one: moving castings, stampings, engine parts, loaded racks. The other big one is robotic palletizing at the end of a packaging or production line, which is what the CP series is built for.
Our post on Kawasaki Robotics USA covers some of the company's history. For the whole brand, start with our used Kawasaki robots buyer's guide.
The BX Series
Kawasaki calls the BX200X a large capacity general purpose robot. Per the Kawasaki BX200X data sheet it is a six axis arm that carries 200 kg with 3,412 mm of reach. That much reach covers a lot of floor from one base, which matters when the robot has to pick from one station and set down at another several meters away. The BX200X we have is never used and comes on the E02 controller.
The BX family has other members, and we keep data sheets on the blog for several of them, including the Kawasaki BX200L, the Kawasaki BX300L and the Kawasaki BX165N. Those are reference sheets for comparing models, not a list of what is on our floor.
The ZX Series
The ZX is another of Kawasaki's large arms. We have a never used ZX130L. For comparison, the blog has data sheets for the Kawasaki ZX200S and the Kawasaki ZX165U.
The MX Series
MX is Kawasaki's high payload line. We have a never used MX700N. For the ZX130L and MX700N, get payload and reach from the listing. A robot in this class also needs a foundation and anchoring plan that matches the data sheet, so involve whoever is doing your floor work early.
The CP Series Palletizers
The CP series are Kawasaki's palletizing robots. We have never used CP180L, CP500L and CP700L units. A dedicated palletizer is built around one kind of motion: pick at the end of a line, place on a pallet, repeat all shift. If your job is stacking cases, bags or crates, a palletizer is the first thing to look at. If the same robot also has to load machines or move parts around a cell, a six axis arm like the BX gives you more flexibility.
When you size a palletizer, look past the rated payload. Add the weight of the gripper, and if you pick more than one case at a time, add the full layer or multi pick load. Then check that the reach covers the pallet stack height you need, not just the footprint.
Controllers
The Kawasaki units in our stock run on E series and F series controllers. The BX200X in our stock is on E02. Our smaller Kawasaki units run on E01 and F60. Our write up on Kawasaki E01, E02 and F60 controllers covers the differences. If the robot has to talk to your line, read our post on industrial robot I/O and plan how it will tie into your PLC.
What to Check Before You Buy
- The controller and pendant. Make sure the controller, teach pendant and cables are part of the package and that the controller generation fits the rest of your floor.
- Cable length. Confirm the cables are long enough for your layout before the robot arrives. Our guide to robot cable sets covers what to look for.
- Tooling. Heavy grippers eat payload fast. Our post on end of arm tooling covers the basics.
- Freight. These are big, heavy machines. Freight is on the buyer, FOB Imlay City, Michigan, so get the shipping weight from the listing early.
When the Job Is Smaller
Not every job needs a 200 kg arm. Kawasaki's RS series covers the light and mid payload range, and our guide to the Kawasaki RS series walks through the RS models one by one. We have both never used and used Kawasaki robots in that range.
